what it is
PlebQR lets you pay any fiat QR code - PromptPay, Thai bank apps, a street food stall's laminated square - with Lightning sats. You scan the merchant's QR, PlebQR generates a Lightning invoice at a small premium, and a matched counterparty (a pleb who wants non-KYC sats) pays the merchant in baht while you pay them in bitcoin. The merchant never knows bitcoin was involved. Use it at plebqr.com, or through the app inside Fedi.
why it matters
Bitcoin is money. Nobody has to wait for "we accept bitcoin" signs - it is a protocol that bridges to any local rail, and the merchants just don't know it yet. No bank account in a foreign country, no surveillance nightmare.
how it holds up in the field
This is the most-used tool in my stack while I spend time in Thailand. Matching usually lands in one to two minutes - fine for restaurants, markets, bills; not for a long line at 7-Eleven. It works because there are plebs on the other side wanting sats. We love this tool and it is quietly the strongest proof that the circular economy already works.
the trade-offs
It is P2P - no counterparties, no match. Coverage is strongest in Thailand, growing elsewhere. And you pay a small premium for the privilege of privacy; think of it as the honest price of not feeding a database.
verdict
The daily driver. If you spend bitcoin in Thailand and you are not using PlebQR, you are doing it the hard way.
